Frequently Asked Questions

What conditions do you treat?

We treat all neurological conditions and developmental delay.

In children, the most common reasons for referral are Cerebral Palsy, Traumatic Brain Injury, Epilepsy, and SMA; however we have a vast range of experience supporting genetic, chromosomal, and rare neurological conditions.

For adults, the most common referrals we receive are to support people with Parkinsons and following a stroke.

Do I need a Doctor's referral to book an appointment?

No, referrals are accepted from parents/legal guardians, individuals over the age of 18, case managers and solicitors.

Referrals are also accepted through school’s and riding for the disabled groups, with parents consent.

What age group do you see?

We support people of all ages with neurological conditions; however we specialise in paediatric care with a focus on supporting young people age 0-19.

Do you offer home, school or clinic-based appointments?

We offer sessions wherever it best supports the child. This may be at home, school, nursery, in clinic, hydrotherapy pool, soft play centre.

How long does a session last, and what should my child wear?

Sessions typically last about 45 minutes, with 15 minutes summary and administration time.

The session length depends on the child’s needs, levels of fatigue and attention.

Comfortable clothes should be worn, allowing full range of movement. The child may be required to undress to allow postural examination, but specific consent will be obtained prior to this.

If the session is being attended at the clinic, then warm clothes, and boots/wellies should be worn - it is a countryside clinic.

How is neurological physiotherapy different from standard physiotherapy?

Neurological Physiotherapy focuses on re'-establishing neural pathways through repetition, movement patterns and functional tasks.

In addition to this, the neurological physiotherapy sessions will also assess joint range of movement, muscle strength and balance.

The neurological physiotherapist will discuss a full medical history, such as pregnancy and developmental milestones, onset of injury, to determine the most optimal treatment options to utilise neuroplasticity.
